OntoMed is a spin-off from Ontonix. Created in mid-2009, the company has the mission of delivering complexity concepts and technology to the medical community. OntoMed builds its offering on OntoSpace™, a complexity quantification and management tool which it licenses from Ontonix. Under development for nearly a decade, OntoSpace™ is an unusual software tool. Ever since its commercialization in 2005, OntoSpace™ has been used successfully in diverse fields, such as economics, finance, engineering, traffic management, defense and social studies, illustrating how the complexity definition and metric developed by Ontonix is of universal validity and applicability. In particular, the technology has proven to be particularly useful in a pre-alarm context, delivering early-warning signals whenever a given monitored system displays sudden complexity gradients. Complexity monitoring – which today may be performed in real-time – is the fundamental mechanism allowing us not only to view dynamical systems from a holistic perspective, it also establishes a unique means of actually quantifying the degree of stability of any kind of system, such as a corporation, a traffic system as well as a hospitalized patient.
Because modern science lacks a holistic perspective, favoring super-specialization in apparently disjoint disciplines, a patient is rarely seen and treated as multi-organ dynamical system of systems. Due to this cultural limitation and because of the overwhelming complexity of the human body, only on rare occasions is medical science quantitative. Our mission is to deliver a technology which will provide the medical community with quantitative and holistic information on the state of a patient, as well as on the impact of treatment.
